Zeeland is a Dutch province in the southwest of the Netherlands, made up of a number of islands, peninsulas and a portion of the mainland on the border with Belgium. Zeeland has about 383,000 inhabitants. The capital of Zeeland is Middelburg, and the largest city is Terneuzen. Zeeland is home to numerous idyllic towns and villages and an impressive 650 km of coastline. Zeeland is perfect for both active and beach vacations.

3 Main Islands in Zeeland

Zeeland clearly illustrates how the Dutch work with the waters of the North Sea. The headlands and islands are connected with stable dikes, which form the border to the North Sea. Below you will find the most important information about the three most beautiful islands of Zeeland.

On the southernmost of the peninsula is Middelburg, the capital of the province. Middelburg is an old trading town and used to be lined with eight city gates. Today, Koepoort is the only remaining gate that reminds us of times gone by. In the center of the city is the Zeeuws Museum in the Abbey of Our Lady, founded in 1100. Here you can explore the history of Zeeland through more than 30,000 objects.

Be sure to climb the abbey tower Lange Jan, at 90 meters high, it offers a fantastic view over the entire peninsula.

Middelburg is definitely worth a day (or half-day) trip! The best way to explore the city is on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. Canal tours are also available. Enjoy the tranquility of the water and gaze at the pretty old houses and narrow streets from below!

Domburg, one of the most popular places for German visitors, is also located on Walcheren.

Schouwen Duiveland

Schouwen Duiveland is located north of Walcheren and is connected to the mainland and the other islands by bridges and dikes. Located here are popular and well-known resorts such as Renesse, Bruinisse and Zierikzee. Renesse is ideal for a North Sea sunbathing vacation thanks to its wide beach. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer. Bruinisse is known for its mussel fishing and Zierikzee is the most populous town of Schouwen Duiveland with about 11,000 inhabitants. Historic buildings such as the old town hall and Sint-Lievensmonstertoren, also known as the thick tower, are well-known sights. The former city wall is mostly well preserved and characterizes the cityscape.

Schouwen Duiveland is great for an excursion or a vacation all year round. You can enjoy numerous watersports, relax on the beach or be enchanted by the wonders of the nature. Sprawling sand dunes and a polder landscape with many original villages give Schouwen Duiveland an unspoiled character. To the north, Schouwen Duiveland is also popular, as well as somewhat quieter Goeree-Overflakkee.

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, also known as the “last tip of Holland”, is surrounded by the Westerschelde to the north and borders the North Sea to the west. To the south is the border with Belgium, with famous cities like Antwerp and Bruges. This part of the country is connected to the island of Walcheren by the 6.6 km long Westerschelde Tunnel, the longest tunnel in the Netherlands. Terneuzen is the largest and most famous city in this region .

A popular destination in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is the mussel village of Philippine, southwest of Terneuzen. It comprises only 2,000 inhabitants, but has eight shellfish restaurants. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is best explored by bicycle. The tall trees along the dikes are striking and the beaches are of course not to be overlooked, as they make for a perfect summer vacation.

Beaches in Zeeland

Vlissingen, Domburg and Westkapelle are just a few of the popular seaside resorts Zeeland has to offer. Here you can relax on wide, very well-kept beaches or indulge in watersports. Westkapelle and the neighboring town of Oostkapelle are well-suited for such sports and activities. Renesse is another very popular vacation destination on the middle of the three peninsulas on the west coast of Holland.
